An electromagnetic lock, (also frequently referred to as a maglock), is basically a locking device which consists of a coil assembly and an armature plate that create a locking action when the electromagnetic coil is energised by a passing electrical current; creating a magnetic field which secures the door.
With this type of locking mechanism in place, doors can be locked and unlocked remotely, simply by turning the power source on and off. In situ, a switch or button is positioned close by, enabling users access. To unlock the door, the switch or button is used to remove the power and de-energise the magnet, allowing the door to be opened.
Perhaps the most popular application for a maglock is on an emergency exit or fire door. These mechanisms can be retrofitted very easily and require no mechanical latch to lock the door. This means that in the event of an emergency, the exit can be released quickly and easily and in the event of a power cut, the door will automatically be released.
The area that connects the electromagnetic element to the armature plate is relatively large, creating a strong force that is sufficient to stand up to a substantial amount of stress.
The holding force of a maglock indicates the strength of this force and therefore a higher holding force will indicate a stronger and more secure locking device.
