The Finer Details

It is an industry standard that insurance rated 5 lever deadlocks have two standard options for sizing:

• 68mm case depth with a 45mm backset.
• 80mm case depth with 57mm backset.

The overall case height and forend dimensions vary with brands and models but the backset measurement and case depth are fixed in most instances, at least within a few millimeters. 

Deadlocks have one protruding deadbolt which is operated by the key. Escutcheons should be fitted to cover the cutouts in the timber. To open and close the door there are two options:

• Install a pull handle and push plate.
• Fit a separate door latch with door handles.

Mortice deadlocks are commonly installed on front entrance doors to residential properties and used in conjunction with a rim night latch lock. The 5 lever locks provides the insurance rating and main element of security. The nightlatch is a secondary locking point but also has a bevelled latch bolt so the door will automatically be secured once it is closed after use. 

5 lever locks can be fitted to rebated pairs of doors but ensure you select the correct brand and model of rebate kit for your door lock.
