Emergency Lighting

LED Emergency Lights for Safer Escape Routes

Emergency lighting is a vital part of building and fire safety, providing reliable illumination when mains power fails. In an outage, LED emergency lights help reduce confusion and guide people safely along exit routes.

Emergency escape route lighting is required across public and commercial buildings, as well as shared areas within residential developments such as blocks of flats. From car parks and stairwells through to internal areas such as corridors, offices, and warehouses, different areas place different demands on emergency lighting systems.

Selecting the correct type for each location supports compliance and helps protect occupants when it matters most.

Types of Emergency Lighting in This Range

A well planned system uses different styles of units to suit each area of the building. Some options even include integrated exit signs with directional indication. Our stocked selection includes the most common types of fittings for UK projects.

Emergency Light Blade Exit Signs

Blade emergency light exit signs project from walls or ceilings for clear visibility from multiple directions. Their double sided illuminated design suits open areas and corridors, while the arrows indicate the direction of travel along the escape route.

Two mounting options are possible as standard, with additional installation kits available for wall, suspended, and recessed installation.

Emergency Light Box Exit Signs

Slimline box lights combine illumination and signage in a compact wall mounted format. Arrows point people towards the nearest exit. The CQR box light also includes an adjustable angle downlight to support escape route illumination.

Emergency Bulkheads

Bulkheads are a practical choice for exit doors and corridors, providing broad illumination when mains power fails. The CQR bulkhead includes an optional self adhesive arrow, giving flexibility to use it as a light only fitting or combine it with signage.

Emergency Downlights

Emergency downlights provide focused illumination while remaining discreet in day to day use as they are recessed mounted. They often have different lens options, such as for corridors or open areas.

Emergency Lighting Testing and Operation

Emergency lights offer a variety of functions to suit the requirements of different sites. Some units allow key settings to be selected at installation, while others are configured to operate in a fixed mode.

All products in this range are self-contained with an internal battery and offer operating and testing options to suit the building layout and maintenance requirements of your site.

Manual Test and Self Test Emergency Lighting

Emergency light fittings rely on an internal battery during a mains outage, with the battery kept charged by the mains supply during normal operation. Regular testing is essential to check battery condition and confirm the light will operate when required.

This range includes both options.

  • Manual test: The unit is left to run on battery for the full duration, making this approach better suited to smaller buildings or simpler systems.
  • Self test: Carries out routine checks automatically, helping reduce maintenance time for large sites.

Selecting the right testing method supports ongoing compliance and helps align maintenance routines with the facility’s needs.

Maintained and Non-Maintained Explained

Some models offer flexible configuration, with the required setting selected at installation, typically via wiring or jumper configuration, while others operate in a fixed mode.

  • Maintained: Provides continuous illumination from mains power during normal operation and switches to battery supply if an outage occurs.
  • Non-maintained: Remains unlit in normal conditions and activates only when the mains supply is interrupted.

A power failure can affect more than just lighting and may also impact building security. If doors are secured with electric locks, a battery may need to be added to the power supply to keep systems operating.

Supporting a Complete Fire Safety Strategy

Emergency exit lights support safe evacuation when used alongside other fire safety measures. Combined with clear fire exit signs and panic hardware designed for intuitive operation under pressure, it helps people move through the building safely. This is particularly important for users who may be unfamiliar with the layout or how the door operates.
