When fitting traditional magnetic locks, headroom can often be reduced – shear locks avoid this problem. Here at Door Controls Direct we stock cost-effective shear locks from trusted manufacturers such as Alpro and Adams Rite. Available in both surface mounted and mortice options - these locks are suitable for various door types; wood, aluminium or steel. They can be fitted either horizontally or vertically and work with sliding, single-action or double-action doors (see individual locks for details).
Mortice shear locks are fitted within the door and the frame or at the bottom of a door and into the floor. When the door is closed, the lock bolt will slide up from the door into the frame. The bolt temporarily fills the cavity in the shear lock keep which keeps the door locked and secure. This mechanical locking action provides a high physical shear holding force (hence shear lock). Although they are a form of electromagnetic lock, they are very different to other forms of electric locking. Mortice shear locks are also a good locking solution where aesthetics are an important consideration.
