Push Pad Fire Exit Hardware | Emergency Escape | EN 179

When it comes to emergency escape doors, reliable push pad hardware plays a crucial role in protecting lives. Designed to conform to the requirements of EN 179 standards, these devices are ideal for low occupancy areas with trained personnel. From straightforward latches to shoot bolts and external digital keypads, this range of emergency push pad solutions is engineered for safety, simplicity, and compliance.

Meeting the Demands of Safety Regulations

Every emergency escape door requires hardware that complies with industry standards while ensuring quick and easy operation. Products in this category are tested to ensure full compliance with BS EN 179. This makes them suitable for applications where panic bars aren’t required, such as restricted-access areas or staff-only doors where the room occupancy is under 60 people.

Whether you’re specifying for offices or flats, you’ll find robust solutions that meet legal and operational needs. BS EN 179 also covers pull pad and lever handle operation of emergency exit hardware so contact us today if you require a different emergency egress solution.

Wide Range of Products to Suit Your Facility

Push Pad Emergency Exit Latches

Push pads provide a secure yet straightforward means of exiting a building during an emergency. They can have a horizontal latch that provides single point locking. Options in this range include the Briton 1438 push pad panic latch, known for its fire rating and reversible handing, and the versatile Exidor 297 push pad, ideal for single and double door applications when used with the 293 pad and 300 keep.

Push Pad Panic Bolts

Push pad exit devices aren’t just latches. Like the ARRONE AR884, they can have top and bottom shoot bolts providing 2 or 3 point locking for extra security. Depressing the pad on a panic bolt will release all bolts in one simple motion, providing the required single action egress. Panic bolts can have additional features such as vertical or horizontal Pullman latches, anti-thrust devices, or adjustable shoots. Check product-specific data sheets for the details.

Paddle Handles

For doors requiring a more ergonomic solution, paddle handles such as the Adams Rite 4591 paddle handle deliver smooth and efficient operation. These handles are a practical choice for single-action exits, combining modern design with exceptional functionality.

Pull Pads

The opposite in operation to a standard push pad, a pull pad still provides single action egress. As with any EN 179 solution, they should only be fitted in areas where a panic situation is not foreseen.

Push Pad Key Features and Benefits

  • Rim or Mortice - Pad operated latches can be rim mounted or morticed with a nightlatch function. Check the door thickness can accommodate the width and depth of the lockcase when choosing a mortice nightlatch lock.
  • Vertical Bolts or Latch - Fire escape push pads can have a horizontal latch bolt for single point locking, or vertical shoot bolts to secure the door in two points.
  • Finish Options - Depending on the range, standard finish options include black, silver, and white. Special order finishes cover metal finishes like brass and stainless steel, and coloured RAL finishes.
  • Single or Double Door Application - Products suitable for single doors that are outward opening, and models for non-rebated and double rebated doors.
  • External Access Requirements - Push pad emergency latches can work in conjunction with outside access devices (OADs). These provide lever or knob operated external authorised access.
  • Versatile Application - Models and fixings for timber doors, uPVC doors, and metal doors. Extra long fixings are also available for thicker doors, especially when using OADs.
  • Non-handed Emergency Pads/Handles - Products are suitable for left of right handed doors. Follow manufacturer-specific instructions for latch reversal or lever handing.
  • Accessories and Spares - Supplement your setup with double door strikes, rebate kits, top trips, and more. For additional security on outward opening doors, fit security hinge bolts with your existing hinges, or hang doors on security hinges.

Fire Exit Push Pads for Fire Doors

When safeguarding fire doors that are also emergency exits, hardware must not only comply with safety standards but also with fire door hardware standards. These devices are specifically designed for fire-rated door sets, ensuring both escape efficiency and compliance with fire regulations. Look for products fire tested to EN 1634 -1, that are CE marked, UKCA marked, and Certifire Approved as suitable for use. Ensure you fit a tested solution that suits the fire rating of your door e.g. 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 120 minutes.

Choosing the Right Emergency Exit Devices

Selecting the right emergency exit hardware depends on the specific requirements of your project. Consider factors such as door type, frequency of use, and the need for public use when exploring options. Popular choices like fire door push pads, pull pad, or paddle handles provide flexibility, durability, and compliance, ensuring peace of mind for facilities managers and responsible persons.

If you’re installing panic hardware to a door used by the public or in room occupancies exceeding 60 people, fit a panic bar that complies with BS EN 1125. Push bar panic hardware should be installed with self adhesive push to open signage or equivalent that guides users on the operation of the hardware.
