Intercom Systems

Intercom Systems for Secure and Controlled Door Entry

Intercom systems provide a straightforward way to manage who enters a building. By allowing occupants to speak with callers before unlocking the door, they create a clear communication point at the entrance while maintaining security.

Door intercom systems are widely used in both residential and commercial buildings where controlled access is important. With both audio and video options available, intercom systems can be tailored to suit different environments and security requirements.

Audio and Video Intercom Systems

Different buildings require different levels of visibility and verification at the entrance. Some locations only require an intercom phone for communication. Others benefit from a video entrance system that allows occupants to see who is outside before unlocking the door.

Audio Intercom Systems

Audio intercom systems, such as the Videx 4K and Videx DK4K, provide communication between the entrance panel and an internal handset. They are commonly used in homes, small workplaces, and buildings where visual verification is not needed.

Audio intercom systems allow occupants to:

  • Speak with visitors
  • Answer calls using an internal intercom handset
  • Release the connected electric lock from the handset

Video Door Entry Systems

Intercoms with a camera provide an additional layer of security. Systems such as the Videx ERA video entry system allow occupants to see and speak with callers before granting access. This can be particularly useful when verifying deliveries, checking identification badges, or confirming visitors at controlled entrances.

Benefits of video intercom systems include:

  • Visual verification before granting entry
  • Video intercom handset with colour display
  • Camera recall to check the entrance when needed

Manage Building Access with Intercom Systems

Intercom systems are commonly installed alongside electric locks and other access control components to create a controlled entrance. Electronic locking options can be selected depending on the door type and level of security required.

Some intercom systems also incorporate additional access control features. Some panels include a keypad for coded entry, while others support the use of proximity credentials such as fobs or cards. Authorised users can enter using the keypad or a fob, while visitors request access through the intercom.

door closer should also be installed to ensure the door closes fully after each use to maintain security.

Intercom Systems for Flats, Homes and Workplaces

Door entry systems are commonly installed at the front door of blocks of flats. Residents can speak with the guests and unlock the entrance. This is particularly convenient in apartment blocks where residents may be located several floors away from the entrance.

Intercom entrance panels are available with different numbers of call buttons. Single call button panels are typically used where one household or business manages the entrance. Multi-button panels are better suited to blocks of flats or buildings with multiple occupants.

Intercom systems are also widely used in commercial environments such as:

  • Reception areas that manage building visitors
  • Schools and nurseries that screen people before entry
  • Healthcare environments with controlled access points
  • Offices where staff manage entry from inside the building

A door lock interface module can also be added to an access control system where higher security is required. This links two doors so only one can be unlocked at a time, helping prevent unauthorised access or vulnerable occupants leaving.

Additional access control relays, such as timer modules and fire relays, can also be used to tailor your security system.

Using Multiple Intercom Handsets in One Building

Internal intercom handsets provide the communication point inside the building. Most intercom handsets include a door release button so the entrance can be unlocked. This can be particularly helpful in larger buildings, upper floor flats, or properties where the entrance is located away from the main working area.

Many intercom systems also support additional handsets, such as the Videx 3011 audio handset or Videx 6286 video handset, allowing calls to be answered from multiple locations within the building.

This can be useful where:

  • Reception desks may occasionally be unattended
  • Multiple floors require answering points
  • Larger properties benefit from several handset locations
