Whether you're replacing a failed unit or specifying closers for a new fire door, the Perko concealed door closer range from Samuel Heath raises some common questions. Are Perko door closers compliant? Can they be adjusted? And crucially, are all Perko closers fire-rated? This guide breaks it down, helping you make the right compliant, concealed closing choice.

Perko Door Closer FAQs

Q: What are the differences between the Perko door closer models?

A: There are many differences in this range of concealed door closers. Whether it’s the type of mechanism, maximum door weight, certification, or fire rating.

Use our comparison chart for a quick overview:

Some other key differentiators are:

  • Perko R21: Extended throw, for use with projection and parliament hinges.
  • Powermatic R100: CE marked for use on fire rated doors.
  • Powermatic Axis R108: CE marked for use on fire rated doors, for use with concealed hinges such as the Tectus range. Models like the TE 540 3D hinge are fire rated and available in a range of finishes.

Q: Are Perko closers fire-rated?

A: Yes, but only some of the range. On fire-rated doors, you can install:

They are both compliant fire door closers tested to BS 476 and BS EN 1634-1.

Install with the appropriate intumescent kit on 30-minute and 60-minute doors to achieve the fire rating.

Q: Are Perko door closers compliant?

A: The Perko Powermatic R100 and R108 closers are fire door compliant, tested to BS 476 and BS EN 1634-1. They also have Certifire, CE, and UKCA certification. Plus, both models are ISO 9001 and tested to BS EN 1154, which we explain further below.

Q: Does a Perko door closer comply with BS EN 1154?

A: The single chain Perko R1/R2/R21 and double chain Perkomatic R85 closers are not compliant with this standard - they are not controlled door closers. The Powermatic R100 and Powermatic Axis R108 do comply. These controlled door closers have been successfully type tested to BS EN 1154: 1997 at fixed EN power size 3.

Q: Can a Perko door closer be adjusted?

A: Yes, the Perko closer range is adjustable in different ways depending on the model. Refer to the chart below for available adjustments by model:

For the single chain closers, like the R1 and R2 Perko, you will need to remove the anchor plate. Turn it clockwise to increase the tension, or anti-clockwise to decrease the tension. This will change the pulling power of the spring mechanism.

To adjust the latch action or closing speed of double link rod models, such as the Powermatic R100, there are adjustment screws on the faceplate of the closer. Remove the dust cap, then, using an Allen key for the closing speed, or a flat-head screwdriver for the latching action, the screws can be wound in or out to increase or decrease as required.

Q: Where should Perko door closers be fitted on a door?

A: The precise location and quantity of closers needed will depend on the pattern of the door you have. For fully glazed and heavier doors, you will need to fit two perko closers, one at the top and one at the bottom of the door. On a horizontally pannelled door, locate the closer at the midway point, panels allowing, or at the next available gap above the centre line.

These concealed door closers should always be installed on the hinge side door jamb, with the body of the closer within the material of the door leaf, and the anchor plate on the door frame.
