From the simplicity of tubular latches to the robustness of large case mortice latches, we have a solution for every requirement. Say goodbye to complicated installations and frequent maintenance.
Install a latch where a door needs to be kept shut but not locked. Or, you could have a separate deadlock installed and need a latch so that when the door closes, it is held shut by the latch bolt. The bolt of a latch is retracted by depressing the door handle or turning the door knob. The door can then be opened and closed using the door furniture.
The type of latch you need will depend on the door, its location, its use, and the other items of door hardware that are installed. This is why we have different door latches for a wide range of applications. You can find out more by reading our ultimate guide to door latch types.
It’s not just about locking and latching doors; it’s about doing it in a manner that complements your built environment and its users.

Q: What is a door latch?
A: A latch is a mechanism with a protruding, sprung, beveled bolt that holds a door in a closed position. They are used with lever handles or knobs on non-locking doors, or doors fitted with a separate deadlock.
Q: How do you measure a door latch?
A: There are two measurements to take - overall and backset. Overall - the lockcase depth from the faceplate to the very back. Backset - from the faceplate to the follower (the square hole that the handle spindle fits through).
Q: Are door latches a standard size?
A: In the UK, the most common size is 65mm overall with a 45mm backset (Imperial 2 ½” latch). This would be for a tubular or box latch, with longer lengths available up to 151mm (6”). DIN standard latches are standardised with an 88mm overall measurement and a 60mm backset.
Q: Are door latches universal?
A: No, there is no one universal latch due to the different case sizes, backsets, finishes, and other aspects. Some models of latch are universal as in the latch bolt is reversible - they can be installed either way round because they’re non-handed. Some door latches are handed with a fixed latch bolt, some models are double action (the follower can turn both ways to retract the latch bolt).
Q: Do door handles come with latches?
A: Usually, no. Door handles are typically sold in a pair with no lock or latch due to the different variants of latch available, plus some projects only require replacement handles. Door handle sets or ironmongery kits are available where multiple items are grouped together including locks and operating furniture.
