Fire Door Smoke Seals: Fins vs. Brush

When comparing fire door intumescent strips, the fin design stands out for several reasons.

First, it offers less friction than traditional brush seals, making doors easier to open and close, which is beneficial in high traffic environments and facilities that prioritise accessibility, such as hospitals, care homes, and offices.

Additionally, the smooth surfaces of fins make them easier to clean, which is especially important in infection control environments like healthcare or food preparation facilities. Unlike brush seals, fins don't trap dust and debris, reducing the risk of contamination and making them ideal for sterile spaces.

Durable Fire Protection

This intumescent seal provides much more than just accessibility and hygiene benefits; it is engineered for fire safety and long lasting durability. Made from graphite, the seal expands multi-directionally up to 10-15 times its original size when exposed to heat. This expansion effectively closes the gap between the fire door and its frame, forming a barrier that prevents the spread of fire and smoke, crucial in emergency situations.

The protection offered by this seal plays a vital role in passive fire safety strategies, especially in public buildings, workplaces, care homes, and multi-occupancy dwellings such as flats. By sealing off gaps around fire doors, the seal gives occupants critical time to evacuate safely.

Additionally, the double fin design of this intumescent seal makes it ideal for settings where durability is key. It is resistant to moisture and humidity, ensuring it maintains its integrity over time. Laboratory tested, this seal has a life expectancy of over 100 years under normal conditions, providing a reliable and long term solution for fire safety.

When retrofitting or replacing intumescent door strips, it is essential to consult the fire test evidence for your specific door to ensure compliance with fire regulations and prevent any potential performance issues.

Installation Tips

This 2.1m long seal is available either 10mm or 15mm wide, so you can choose the correct size for your door. The 10mm seal is designed for use on 30 minute fire rated doors, while the 15mm option is suitable for doors rated for either 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance.

The self adhesive backing on this intumescent strip makes installation easy. For best results ensure that the surface is clean and dry before applying the seal.

If you are replacing a damaged strip, it’s recommended to replace all the seals on the door. Mixing different types of intumescent materials could lead to uneven expansion during a fire, causing the door to warp.

When installing intumescent fire and smoke seals, it's critical to check your door's fire test evidence to ensure that any new installation, repairs, or retrofitting maintain full compliance. Always ensure the correct size and fit as per the door manufacturer’s instructions.
