What is an Escutcheon and Why is it Needed?

An escutcheon is a protective and sometimes decorative plate specifically designed to cover the keyhole area around a cylinder lock. During the installation of a cylinder lock, an unsightly hole is often left. The escutcheon fits snugly against the cylinder barrel, effectively concealing this hole and providing a polished appearance. This ensures that your door is finished neatly.

Additionally, euro profile cylinder pulls are available which act as an escutcheon as well as a way to pull the door closed. They are ideal for use on cupboards or external doors and are available in a range of finishes.

Getting the Right Fit

When taking the measurements to find the right size cylinder for your door it is important to factor in the depth of the escutcheons. Don’t forget to add the depth twice if using an escutcheon on both sides of the door with a double cylinder or cylinder and turn

To measure a cylinder:

• Remove the Cylinder: If replacing an existing one, take out the current cylinder from the door.
• Measure the Length: Measure from the centre of the screw hole to each end of the cylinder. Note these measurements as well as the overall length.
• Account for the Escutcheon: This euro cylinder escutcheon is 8mm deep so allow for an additional 16mm if using two.
