Reasons for a Briton 996 Replacement Solenoid

Excess Voltage

The 996 door closer range requires 24V DC voltage plus or minus 10%. If the voltage exceeds 26V DC, this can cause damage to the solenoid.

Incorrect Power Supply Unit

Fitting the wrong PSU with electromagnetic door closers can cause a voltage spike that would damage the solenoid. Use a transformer rectifier to prevent the solenoid from burning out. The rectification unit delivers consistent performance, converting AC mains power to a regulated 25.6V DC output.

Non-Hold Open Issues

On occasion, the door closer may no longer hold open. If the installation and handing of the closer are correct, then it could mean replacing the solenoid, as they can become worn or faulty.

Age Related

As an electrical component, door closer solenoids do wear over time. Older solenoids will need to be replaced when they begin to fail.

Simple Solenoid Installation

This replacement 24V solenoid is easy to install. Follow these simple steps:

  • Isolate the power to the closer
  • Remove the door closer cover
  • Disconnect, then unwire the existing solenoid
  • Wire in the new solenoid

Then it’s a case of reversing the process - replace the cover and reestablish power to the unit.

Best practice is to then perform a test to ensure the electromagnetic door closer operates correctly. This could be in hold open or swing free mode.
