Keep Keys Out Of Sight

Cane burglaries were a serious issue for quite some time when burglars realised that with a simple tool they could extract keys from a console table or key rack in the entrance of a property and drive off in an owner’s vehicle in a matter of seconds. Cane burglaries were given this nickname as criminals used a telescopic cane with a hook fixed to the end to lift keys and remove them – keys that were visible through a letterbox.

As public awareness of this issue increased, this method became more unusual; however, it remains important to take steps to ensure that you do not become victim to this type of crime by taking care to leave your keys out of sight.

Reinforce Security On Rear Entrances

Back doors can be a favourable choice for intruders as they generally provide greater cover, allowing criminals to operate without fear of being spotted by a neighbour or people passing by.

With this in mind, it is important to pay close attention to this area of the home, reinforcing with quality-toughened glazing, (if appropriate), internally operated bolts for when the property is unoccupied, and a solid, well fitted frame.

Avoid The Temptation To Leave Your Keys In An Unlocked Door

Many families leave a set of keys in the door when they are at home, making it convenient to lock up before leaving the property or retiring for the night. In the case of a back door, this habit could potentially be detrimental to your security. If an opportunist spots that you have left your keys in the back of an unlocked door, they could quite easily remove them without you realising and return at a later time to let themselves in and help themselves to your contents.  It is sensible to avoid this habit to be on the safe side!

Check Your Door Frames For Signs Of Deterioration

Old wooden frames with any signs of previous damage or rot may not be up to the task of securing your home. Examine them closely and replace if necessary, keeping in mind that your door is only ever as secure as the frame and hardware it is paired with.

Invest In A Key Safe

Many homeowners hide a spare key for other family members, dog walkers and visitors under a rock, doormat or plant pot. This should be avoided at all costs, as once spotted by the wrong individual; your home is immediately and completely vulnerable. A secure key safe with a code is an effective and inexpensive item that will solve this problem in an instant. Another great option is to fit a digital lock, which will allow you to set codes and change them periodically to give access to employees, tradesman and anyone else who would benefit from being able to access the property without a key!

Make Sure That Patio & French Doors Are Secure

Patio and French doors can be a weak spot if they are not fitted with the right systems to keep intruders at bay. The fact that they are generally situated at the rear of the property makes it even more important to reinforce your locks on these doors for added security and peace of mind.
