In our previous blog, we discussed some of the ways to maximise your security to minimise the likelihood of your property being targeted by criminals. Statistics show that the majority of burglars gain entry through the external doors, rather than the windows of a property, so with this in mind, we have collated a list of great tips to help you to make sure that your property is as safe and secure as possible...
Glazed panels on an entry door can create a weak point, so ideally they should be avoided. If you do have existing glazing in your door however, it is important to check that the glass is either toughened or laminated, giving it the greatest resistance to impact.
Spy holes are an inexpensive security measure that will boost your confidence in the home by enabling you to gain visibility whilst remaining anonymous behind the door. This simple item, which can be fitted easily and inexpensively, can act as a great deterrent to would be intruders.
Another very simple and expensive item to consider fitting is a door chain. With a door chain in place, you can open the door partially to check an individual’s identification and communicate without making yourself vulnerable. These are particularly effective for elderly people and can make them feel much more confident at dealing with unexpected visitors at the door. With the door chain on the identification can be examined and a call made to the company to confirm that the caller is genuine. Keep in mind that it is important to always look up the correct mainline number for the company in this situation, rather than calling any number that is provided on the ID document you are offered.
When you take ownership of a new property – be it residential or commercial, it is wise to change the locks, as you have no way of knowing who has a copy of the existing locks in place.
This may not be as expensive as it sounds, as you may be able to simply change the barrel rather than the entire lock. Get advice from a reputable local locksmith. In terms of peace of mind, this important step is invaluable.
Fit a British Standard Approved 5 lever mortise deadlock to your entrance points to maximise your security. Your insurance company may not be willing to cover you without one!
Solid doors are essential for any entrance point and any hollow- core door should be replaced as a matter of priority as it will not provide adequate security or a suitable platform for suitable door hardware.
Letterboxes can create a weak spot when they are not fitted with security in mind. If you have a letterbox fitted on your front door it must be a high quality unit that is fitted securely and cannot be removed by a potential intruder. The cavity should be 40 centimetres or more from the door lock to prevent anyone sticking their arm through the door to let themselves in.
Letter baskets are a great idea but can allow small hands to remove items of post that could contain cheques, cash and valuable or confidential data. Remove the bottom of the basket so that the post drops down to the floor and cannot be accessed from the outside of the property.
