Burglary is a serious issue and prevention is key. Taking steps to make it look as if a building is occupied and being fastidious about locking up, are two obvious approaches that can make a huge difference to security. Keep an eye out for any suspicious activity around your own and neighbouring properties and in the event that you notice something untoward, report it immediately.

Next step is to take a close look at the quality of your doors and hardware to ensure that they are up to the task of keeping the property safe and secure!

Doors Are The Main Entry Point In The Majority Of Burglaries

Good quality doors play a key role in your home security due to the fact that statistically, most burglars will enter a property through either the front, or back door. These statistics apply to both residential and commercial properties so the same theory applies for both.

Exterior doors should be made of a solid material, (never hollow like the ones that are commonly used in interiors). For extra security choose a solid door that is sandwiched with a metal core, teaming it up with an excellent quality frame and locks to reinforce the entire unit.

Robust Frame & Hinges

Your door will only protect your property from unwanted intruders if it is paired with the right hardware to maintain its strength and structure. Don’t make the mistake of compromising on the quality of these components as you will only leave your property vulnerable. Even the toughest metal door could be kicked off its hinges, or bent out of shape if the hardware is inferior and not fit for purpose.

The frame should be securely fixed to the fabric of the building and exterior doors must always swing outwards, for maximum strength. Hinges must be hidden from view so that there is no risk of an intruder trying to disassemble them from the outside  to gain entry.

Fit A High Quality Deadlock For Additional Security

A British Standard approved deadlock offers exceptional security, adding strength to your door, and for this reason, most insurance companies will insist that you have one in place on any main door to your property. Some deadlocks can only be operated from the inside of the property, offering additional protection when the property is occupied. There are however, other styles, which make it possible to secure from either the inside or the outside.  Fire safety should of course always be a key consideration when fitting and using this type of lock.

CCTV Cameras & Monitoring Equipment Are An Excellent Deterrent

Monitor the approach and entrance points on your property with CCTV cameras. They are an excellent deterrent and may alert you to any suspicious activity that has occurred as well as provide potential evidence should you need it. Pay close attention to any areas where burglars could attempt to conceal themselves, as this will minimise the risks and prevent your property from being targeted.

Generally speaking, burglars are opportunists, therefore it pays to make their job as hard as possible so that they will give your property a wide berth. Prevention as they say is always better than cure!
