Electromagnetic Door Closers: Swing Free vs. Hold Open

Posted on: 03.10.2016

When considering purchasing and installing an electromagnetic hold open or swing free door closer; you need to ensure that the configuration “hold open” or “swing free” suits the door location and how you would like the door to work. It is also important that the door closer has all the required certification to meet current building regulations, so that you do not compromise the safety of any individuals or indeed the building itself.

There is often confusion between the two main variants of “electromagnetic” door closer; A swing free electromagnetic door closer will allow for the door to be opened and closed as if no door closer was fitted but will also ensure that the door fully closes from any angle upon the fire alarm activating.

hold open unit will hold the door in the open position generally between 90 and 120 degrees and again, close it securely in to the frame upon activation of the alarm.

The swing free configuration is ideal for use on bedroom doors in Care Homes as residents may find it difficult to open these heavy fire rated doors. It also creates an environment that does not restrict movement around the building, whilst also giving peace of mind that all fire doors will close; should the fire alarm activate.

Hold open closers are ideal for smooth passage though corridor doors with high traffic levels such as Hospital or School corridors. They ensure that busy thoroughfares are kept clear of the obstruction of a continually self-closing fire door.

Within our product portfolio at Door Controls Direct; we also offer electromagnetic door closers that are designed to be switched to swing free or hold open. The Arrow 624EM is a great example; it’s cost effective and can be universally fitted.
